Farming has been in the family for generations; it was natural for us to follow in our family's footsteps. We are a family-owned and operated farm. This includes both of us, Scott and Rachell Penton, and our two kids, Austin (22) and Courtney (19). Our kids have always helped out since they were old enough to dig up potatoes in the field! Austin is now graduated from Montevallo with a math degree and Courtney is currently at UAB for business.
We started our farm in 2000 and grew more and more every year. We began with about 1800 peach trees, and a few other veggies. In 2008, we started our strawberry patch (Sugar Hills U-Pick Farms). A neighbor of ours was getting out of the strawberry business and sold us some of his equipment. We asked our family members, Michelle and Keith Evans (Evans Farms), to partner with us. We started out with only 28,000 plants, and now we are in our 12th year with 160,000 plants!
In 2016, we decided to expand a little more and started our pumpkin patch. It took a lot of hard work and planning to get it started, but the opening year was a big hit! We grow our own pumpkins in a 30-acre plot with over 50 different varieties. We have continued to add new attractions each year, as well as grow our customer base. We love seeing old and new smiling faces play and laugh at our farm, especially in our super popular, 8-ton corn pit!
If you have the time, here are a few articles written about us during each of our seasons that will help you understand who we are even more!
